Hampel´s history line started in 1899, when a couple of German immigrants, the Hampels, arrived in Brazil. According to records, Dr. Alfredo Hampel built the place to use it as a resting house for sufferers of respiratory diseases, a kind of hotel-sanatorium.

Visitors would come from different parts of the state, even faraway places which demanded several days traveling in carriages drawn by animals. Upon arrival at the hotel, they sensed their sacrifice had paid by experimenting such a pleasant climate.

Life in nature and in a beautiful scenery was a hope for cure for many searching for relief of their infirmities. Parts of the hotel´s original building were made of core Brazilian pine tree boards and this building is still in use.

According to records concerning the administration from September, 1924 (B. Garcia & Cia. Ltda.) references show that the site was known for its excellent quality in air and water. From then on, it is cited as an excellent place for vacationing, and was named Hampel Pension (Pensão Hampel).

Between the 1940´s and 1950´s the hotel became well-known and a group of influent families from Porto Alegre took it over. Their aim was to turn the place into a kind of condominium for leisure purposes. Thus, the new brick building was inaugurated, which houses the main facilities of the hotel up to date.

During the 1970´s the hotel was acquired by the company belonging to the present owners' father and in 1998 they took the Hampel over.
It is also attibuted to the Hampels the introduction of hydrangeas in this mountainous region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a flower which is its symbol.
